Makalu Base Camp Trek

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Take the day to rest and acclimate to the city’s atmosphere. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore nearby markets or attend a pre-trek briefing to prepare for the Makalu Base Camp adventure ahead.

Today is dedicated to obtaining the necessary trekking permits, including the Makalu Barun National Park Permit and TIMS card. While the permits are being arranged, enjoy a guided sightseeing tour around the Kathmandu Valley. Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, or Patan Durbar Square. Later, attend a pre-trek briefing and gear check.

Take an early morning scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, offering beautiful views of the Himalayas. Upon landing, begin a drive through lush hills, small villages, and terraced farmland toward Num. The journey gives you a glimpse of rural eastern Nepal. Arrive in Num by evening and stay overnight at a local lodge.

Today’s trek begins with a steep descent through forests and terraced fields to the Arun River. After crossing a suspension bridge, the trail climbs steadily uphill through lush vegetation and small settlements. Enter the Makalu Barun National Park as you reach Seduwa, a beautiful village with views of surrounding hills and farmlands.

Begin the trek with a gradual uphill climb through forests, terraced fields, and traditional Rai and Sherpa villages. The trail passes mani walls and prayer flags, offering cultural glimpses along the way. After a steady ascent, you’ll reach Tashigaon—the last permanent settlement on the trail. Surrounded by hills and forests, Tashigaon is a peaceful village where you’ll spend the night in a local teahouse.

Today is one of the more challenging days as you ascend steeply through dense forests of rhododendron and oak. The trail includes stone steps and occasional clearings with stunning views. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes more alpine. After a long climb, you’ll reach Khongma Danda, a scenic ridge offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Today is reserved for acclimatization to help your body adjust to the higher altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. You can take a short hike around Khongma Danda to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys or simply relax and rest. This rest day is crucial before crossing the high passes ahead.

Today’s trek is both challenging and rewarding as you cross several high passes: Kongma La (3,890 m), Ghungru La (4,055 m), Shipton La (4,200 m), and Keke La (4,170 m). Along the way, you'll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Makalu and Chamlang. After the final descent through alpine terrain and forests, you’ll reach the peaceful village of Dobate.

Begin the day with a descent through dense rhododendron and pine forests, crossing several small streams. The trail then climbs gradually as you enter the beautiful Barun Valley. Surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. After a scenic and moderate ascent, you’ll reach Yangri Kharka, a serene pastureland with a few teahouses.

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the stunning alpine valley. The trail gradually ascends along the Barun River, passing through yak pastures, rocky terrain, and shrublands. The air gets thinner as you gain altitude, so a steady pace is important. Along the way, enjoy incredible views of Peak 6, Peak 7, and other Himalayan giants. Reach Langmale Kharka by afternoon and rest at a teahouse.

This is the most anticipated day of the trek as you make your way to Makalu Base Camp. The trail ascends gradually through rocky terrain and glacial valleys, with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks, including Makalu, Peak 6, and Peak 7. As you approach the base camp, the landscape becomes barren and dramatic. Upon arrival, enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic Mount Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world.

Spend the day at Makalu Base Camp to fully absorb the stunning surroundings. Use this time to rest, take photographs, and explore nearby areas such as glacial moraines and small alpine lakes. Enjoy close-up views of Mount Makalu and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. This day also allows for proper acclimatization before the return trek.

Begin your descent from Makalu Base Camp, retracing your steps through stunning alpine terrain. The trail gradually descends through rocky valleys and lush pastures, offering magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. Reach Yangri Kharka by evening, where you’ll rest overnight in a teahouse.

Continue descending through beautiful forests of pine and rhododendron, crossing several streams along the way. The trail offers peaceful natural surroundings and stunning mountain views. Arrive in Dobate by afternoon and rest overnight in a comfortable teahouse.

Today, you’ll continue descending through lush forests and terraced fields. The trail winds along the river, passing through small villages where you can experience local culture and hospitality. Arrive at Danda Kharka in the afternoon and stay overnight at a teahouse.

Descend further through dense forests and terraced farmland on this scenic route. The trail passes local villages where you can observe traditional lifestyles and farming practices. Arrive in Seduwa by afternoon and enjoy a comfortable overnight stay in a teahouse.

Begin the day with a short, easy trek from Seduwa to Num, passing through scenic rural landscapes. From Num, take a drive back to Tumlingtar, enjoying the lush surroundings of eastern Nepal. Arrive in Tumlingtar by evening and stay overnight in a hotel or lodge, preparing for your flight the next day.

Take a morning flight from Tumlingtar back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure—shop, relax, or explore the city’s vibrant culture.
